Passive crashworthiness systems for electric vehicles

Abstract

In addition to daily usability, it offers sufficient travel range, fast battery charging time, comprehensive service infrastructure, reliability and high performance. These are important requirements that play a key role in consumer acceptance of electric vehicles. However, electric energy storage and high-voltage systems also pose a major challenge in terms of crash safety, and their additional weight can be compensated by reducing the body weight. Electric vehicles also achieve outstanding results in crash tests, thanks to more efficient crumple zones, but this requires new design solutions and new material combinations. Honeycomb structural designs, metal foam integration and the use of battery platforms as body panels are solutions to these design challenges. The aim of this study is to present these technical solutions, which are also used in today's modern vehicles, and to identify further development options.
