The possibilities of using the oxygen index in the fire protection rating of cables

Abstract

Electrical cable systems have a prominent role in our day-to-day life, without them the functioning of almost all areas of life would be unimaginable.
In the following, I will provide an overview of the roles of electrical cable systems, which is very complex, since they form an integral part of fire protection systems from a fire protection point of view, but can also arise as a cause of fire.
I present the classification system for electric cables from a fire protection point of view, and the oxygen index method as an alternative test method, in the light of the burning triangle. Furthermore, I will illustrate the importance of proper planning, which is based on proper certification and regulation, and would not even necessarily mean additional costs during investments, but would have many advantages from a fire protection point of view.
